Pre-Diabetes, They Don’t Count Calories Like They Used To
Should they mark packages, pre-diabetics beware? I was sauntering through the local market searching for something new when I spied a colorful package with a tasty morsel staring back at me through the transparent cover. It had a certain wonderful magnitism to it that I could not resist.
I knew before I grabbed it that the calorie count would set me back a week. I looked up to see if I was still in the diet food section, maybe my nose had misdirected me into bakery products
I was thrilled to find I was indeed still in the diet food section of the store. Well, since the item is in the diet section it must be okay, so I immediately tore off the wrapping and took a bite.
You would have thought I would look at the lable before I took a bite of this little gem, If you thought that you don’t know me. I like the bad news after a good meal. But, a tiny peek at the lable was relaxing because the amount of protein and fat were balanced – no reason not to eat it now, right? And I would of – had I not had this reasonable side of me. I looked. OH MY GOD – 70 calories. Where are all the zeros?
I did not recognize the brand on the label but there was a phone number in small, almost unreadable print. I wondered if the bakery would be willing to share the secret of how they did it – all that taste, the aroma, the sweetness, and with only a token of calories.
A young lady answered the phone with a voice like a teenager. She said she was the wife of the baker and that their business was 2 years old. She said they were growing like crazy, especially after they introduced the product that captivated me.
She was reluctant in revealling the secret ingredients, but she would talk about how they determined the calorie content. She looked up the Food and Drug lable regulations about the lable. They did not specify the exact method she must use to determine the contents, she said, so she found a book that discussed food and calories and made a guess.
The product was safe by all food standards, and sitting on a shelf just waiting for a bozo like me to believe any lable that pleased me.
This ia a personal story that is true and unexaggerated. Large food corporations use outside laboratories for food analysis. Regional and smaller companies get along with less. The point: when it come to diabetes and even prediabetes, the stomach can easily blindfold the eye.
